We are currently finalising the provisional programme for the Women in Magazines: Research, Representation, Production and Consumption conference that SHAW is supporting along with the Centre for the Historical Record (Kingston University), the Women’s History Network and The Women’s Library. It looks set to be a great event! If you aren’t already on the conference mailing list but would like to see the programme when it’s available, then please email womeninmagazines@gmail.com.
What a busy bunch SHAW members are! On 3rd May, we reported on Alison Goodrum’s latest article and now we are delighted to report that Dawn-Marie Gibson’s new book on the Nation of Islam is available. Congratulations, Dawn-Marie! Check it out via the link: http://www.abc-clio.com/product.aspx?isbn=9780313398070
The latest ‘Women in Magazines’ conference poster is now doing the rounds. If you receive it, then please pass it on as widely as possible (if you haven’t already got a copy and would like to then please just email womeninmagazines@gmail.com).
The event looks set to be a great couple of days - good enough to match the fab poster! Special thanks go to US Vogue for supplying us with such a great image from their archives.
At the Steering Group meeting last Wednesday, we decided to make the minutes from the meeting available to all our members via this blog (albeit in an abridged form as certain sensitive info needs to remain confidential). To find out what went on at RHUL, follow the Steering Group page link on the bottom right of this page…NB Post-meeting gossip over dinner remains strictly off-the-record!
SHAW’s Steering Group are meeting next Wednesday (25th April). If you have any items, ideas or suggestions that you’d like us to discuss, then email them to Rachel.Ritchie@brunel.ac.uk.
Looking to raise your profile? Want to engage with other SHAW members around the world? Then the ‘Spotlight On’ feature in our newsletter is for you! A short interview with Twitter style answers is all that’s required to spread the word about you and your research interests. Email Rachel.Ritchie@brunel.ac.uk to register interest. Who knows who it might connect you with?!
Somewhat belatedly, the photographs taken at the fifth annual SHAW conference, ‘History of Women in the Americas’, held at Brunel University on Wednesday 14th March 2012, are no available to view via our Facebook page (facebook.com/shawsociety) or the conference page of this blog - see the link to HWA 2012 on the bottom right of here. Apologies to anyone who we missed - we could do with an official SHAW photographer at these events!
From organising one conference (History of Women in the Americas) to another (Women in Magazines), & trying to sort 80+ papers in c24 coherent panels. The phrase ‘herding cats’ springs to mind!
Tomorrow is the fifth annual SHAW conference. How quickly it is upon us! Everything is in order and seems to be organised. Almost forgot the cellotape, but that wouldn’t be the greatest disaster that could befall us! It looks set to be a great day, with some really interesting and stimulating papers.
The CfP deadline for Women in Magazines, the second SHAW conference of the year (being held at Kingston University in July), is this Friday, 9th March. We’ve had some great submissions already but it isn’t too late if you want to submit something. Please send c250 word abstracts to womeninmagazines@gmail.com.
